Congratulations on your win as Fic of the Week, chocaholic123! This lovely lady is a new fanfiction author to me; I found her around Christmas time when I read and enjoyed her sweet, holiday romance, Baby, It’s Cold Outside. I am so glad I put her on author alert because youknow when you read the initial chapter of a new fic and you say to yourself Wow, what anattention-grabbing storyline, I think this is going to be one hell of a good story, well, that isexactly how I felt when I read the Prologue of Fix You. It's such a profound introduction to thestory, so much is revealed if you really analyze it. Now, after twelve additional chapters, I knowthis is one hell of a good story, and I’m excited every time an update hits my Inbox.

The story is entitled Fix You for the beautiful song of the same name by Coldplay. It starts outin the present day with a bang, when we meet both British Bella and American Edward, and youcan easily sense the tension and history that already surrounds these two characters. At this pointwe’re not exactly sure what they are or were to each other, although you have the feeling thatthey did have some kind of intense, past relationship…

 Prologue

 May 12th 2012

The contempt he felt towards her was radiating off of him.

Bella tried to keep her breathing steady, reminding herself that although she was in his office, onthe penthouse floor of his building, this was her show.

 She was in control.

Because truth be told, if he viewed her with contempt now, God only knew how he would feelonce he'd heard what she had to say. He had been a large part of her life for so long—as afriend, a confidante, even a lover—but never before did he have the power to break her.

"As nice as it is to see you," he drawled, the tone of his voice making it patently clear that herpresence in his office was anything but nice, "I have a meeting in five minutes. Exactly what is itthat you want?"

He had no idea, but this was it. Time to open her mouth and tell him what he needed to hear. Herarms suddenly felt tingly, her fingers moving as if they could no longer remain still; a physicalmanifestation of her nervousness. The laughter in her throat had been replaced by somethingmore unsettling, as she tried to take in a deep breath and form the words that she needed to say.

Her tongue darted out to moisten her lips. She watched his gaze move down to her mouth, staring at it with dark eyes, as her teeth drew in her bottom lip.

"Edward." Her voice was surprisingly strong. She could do this. She could tell him the truth, andthen get the hell out of here.

 Back on a plane.

 Back home.

 Back to him.

Wow, what a tantalizing opening! Bella’s thoughts express her unease but resolve regardingher news for Edward, while he clearly wants distance from her; I felt like the hurt, resentment, maybe even dislike was palpable from both of them. What she does reveal is actually life-altering, and I am still anxiously awaiting his reaction to this news, because after this we jumpback in time with chapter one to Friday 31st December 1999, where Bella and Edward first meetin London, England.

Each carefully executed consecutive chapter, is in itself a time stamp of the story as it tells theprogression of their history from twelve years past and slowly works toward the Prologue. Andbecause the story is told in third person narrative we get to experience both Bella and Edward’slives in New York and England—together and separately—and we see their complicated andfragile relationship gradually grow and intensity.

Like the summary states Bella and Edward come from two different worlds. In 1999, sweet, snarky Bella lives in Putney in London, England with her hard-working Mom, who is a partyplanner, and they “were London-poor.” And while her father, who lives in New York withhis other family, is a successful businessman, he is somewhat estranged from Bella, andshe doesn’t really benefit from his good social standing. Then we have Edward Cullen, therich, Manhattan, Columbia, “Prep Boy” who also has ties to England through his well-off—

“Manhattan elite…who were living in London”—father and stepmother, so he unquestionablylives a charmed and totally dissimilar life to Bella.

Their worlds collide, though, when Bella is obliged to work for her mom at Edward’sstepmother’s New Year’s Eve party, and from there they progressively form a friendship, andgradually infiltrate each other’s worlds…and hearts.

 Chapter 1

 Friday 31st December 1999

As she walked into the entrance hall, Bella found her breath taken away by the splendor. It wasopen to all three levels of the house, with a marble staircase curving up the right hand side.Right in the middle of the ornately tiled floor was the biggest Christmas tree she had ever seen.It was covered from trunk to tip with tasteful decorations. There was no silver tinsel, or pinksparkly Christmas lights to be seen. Just red and gold ornaments, with understated twinklingwhite lights strung all around the tree. The spruce had to be at least twenty foot tall.

"See something you like?" Bella's hackles rose at the sound of the smooth American drawl, coming from somewhere behind her. She whipped her head around to see a young man standingat the bottom of the marble staircase. He was wearing loose, dark-washed jeans, hanging almostobscenely off his lean hips. His t-shirt was tight and black, with 'Columbia' emblazoned in bluewriting across the front.

And his face; Lord his face. It was all jaw and plump lips, complimented by a straight nose anddeep green eyes. He looked like every clean cut, Manhattan boy she had ever had the misfortuneto come into contact with.

 Irina would have loved him.

Bella took in a short breath, and looked Prep Boy straight in the eye. "Not really. I was justwondering if Charlie Brown was missing his Christmas Tree."

She spun around and flounced towards the kitchen, barely hearing his bark of laughter as shewalked away from him. She bit back the smile that was threatening to creep across her lips.

It looked like tonight had just got interesting.

Definitely interesting and entertaining, and as I read this again, then look back at the Prologueand subsequent posted chapters that have covered into 2001, I continue to wonder why Edwardfelt such “contempt” toward Bella, because I really haven’t seen any of that yet in the chaptersrecounting the past. I’ve seen a budding, sweet, supportive friendship, with a little Jealousward, some hot kissing and bucketful’s of UST thrown in for good measure. So, I contemplate whatcould have happened to cause the obvious tension between them, especially if they were friends, confidantes, and lovers in the past.

Like I said earlier, it’s an absorbing story, and as you can tell, we still have so many questionsto be answered! I can’t wait to reach the Prologue again and to discover the answers to some ofthese queries, until then, I’m simply going to enjoy the pleasure of reading this well-written storyas we wait to find out who is fixing whom: Lights will guide you home, and ignite your bones.

And I will try, to fix you.
