Love Letters

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, love is in the air here at The Lemonade Stand. So we asked a group of authors to choose an author they love – someone who moves them, be it through their words or uplifting presence in our fandom – and write them a love letter. Due to the overwhelming positive response, we will be posting these daily, from now until Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day to JiffyKate (Jiff Simpson and Jenny Kate)!

When I was invited to participate in this love fest, I immediately thought of you two. I picked you two for a reason – several reasons, actually.

When I first came to this fandom, things worked a little differently. We were sucked in by the writer’s story, their words, and the love on the page. Once social media came into play, the rules sort of changed. We got to “meet” our favorite readers and writers. We all became friends…or enemies, depending on the drama of the hour. We could laugh, cry, debate, theorize, and chatter all day long about our favorite characters.

With you two, it happened backwards for me. I got to know you through social media before I’d ever read anything you’d written. Shame on me, I know! I’m kind of glad, though, because what I saw was something special.

I want to thank you. I want you to know that you two brighten my day. In a world filled with anger and drama and hate, you two bring something light and fun and easy to this fandom. Your friendship is strong, and even on a bad day, you’re laughing at silly, fun stuff. That’s so damned important.

What I don’t think you realize is that it translates to your stories. I think I’ve tried to tell you both many times, but it doesn’t hurt to say it again.

While humor plays a big part in your stories, there is this feeling of pure hope that comes through even the toughest of subjects. Your story Bella Donna, which is a personal favorite of mine, was an excellent example of that. Your Vampward, which is a genre I can’t say no to, seemed harsh and cold, but he wasn’t, really. He was lost, and watching him find his way was a fantastic ride, not to mention that hint of Pretty Woman that sucked me in completely.

However, your current project is quickly climbing up to the top of my faves list. The Other One is a brilliantly woven story. Nothing shows hope better than this story. Nothing. It has been an amazing thing to watch this Edward, who truly was broken – both physically and emotionally – come back to life with the help of a Bella that I absolutely adore. She’s the epitome of strength, hope, and the light at the end of Edward’s very long, dark tunnel. You guys consider it a slow burn, but I never felt the “slow” side of that statement. I think it’s your best work, and the pace is perfect.

So I thank you. I thank you for your stories, for those little glimmers of happy and easy.

I also want to thank you from my side of the coin. As a writer, there are days where it’s tough to read the harsh reviews, the ugly things people can say. You two bring so much fun my way. Your excitement gets me excited, and that’s a huge deal to me. It means more than I can explain here in this letter.

So I hope you guys have a happy Valentine’s Day, and know I send big hugs and smooches your way.

Much love,
Deb (Drotuno)

Dear Jess(Khar/JM)-

When it comes to our friendship, I find it hard to actually recall when it started - at this point, it’s hard to remember not being friends.

What I do remember is it began when there was so much buzz about EP and I had only just begun reading it.  I recall reading the first chapter and thinking “Holy crap, this girl is so talented” (I assure you there were more expletives in that statement, but I’m trying to be a lady here. LOL) but at that point, I really had no idea how truly accurate that statement was.  You have always had a raw, natural talent for writing - you have this way of crafting your words so that everything you write paints such a vivid picture and I’ve always admired that about you.  Even back when you were...shall we say “a little wordy”(haha)...your writing was so extraordinary that people still wanted to soak up every last word you wrote.  Not a lot of authors are able to do that and you always have...even in the very beginning.

Once I started working with you on your story, I watched your talent blossom before my eyes.  With just a little support from me, you took off flying - and you just keep getting better and better.  I am floored as I read each of your published works how far you have come and at the same time, it’s even more so mind blowing because you were already so damn good to begin with.

You recently said to me that you couldn’t believe that you were lucky enough to do something you love every day for a living.  I think your words were, “Who woulda thunk it” if I remember correctly.  I did.  And I bet a lot of other people who have read and loved every word you have given us would agree with me.  Your larger than life heart and your up front, no bullshit honesty is refreshing and it’s reflected in everything you write.  That’s a rarity and it draws your readers in like a magnet, making them want to come back over and over for more and more.

You, my friend, deserve all the success you have achieved and more.  I feel so lucky to have been able to watch you evolve into the amazing author you are today and am even more so grateful to have been fortunate enough to be even a little part of that.  I will never forget all of the laughs we had while you were writing EP, or how I triple dog dared you to write me a My Best Friend’s Wedding/Twilight crossover with the ending we both wanted and without hesitation, you gave us all Pinky Swear.

On a personal level, I also will never forget all the wonderful things you did for me and my kids, especially when I was struggling to keep my sanity through tough times.  You never failed to keep my spirits up and were one of my biggest cheerleaders -- it helped me more than you realize.

Anyway, I just wanted to take this opportunity to tell you that you seriously amaze me and I am so proud to call you my friend.  We may not have the ability to chat all day every day like we used to (I don’t know about you, but I really miss those days), but not a day goes by that I’m not thankful to have you in my life.  I love you to pieces!

xoxo

Dear LolaShoes,

When I started reading Twific, I didn’t know about sites like this one, and a well-written sex scene often seemed like a minor miracle. Then I stumbled across your “Let Your Light Shine,” in which human Bella and vampire Edward consummate their marriage without trauma, and then enthusiastically repeat the experience for several more chapters. Their love-making is not free of emotional hiccups, but it is fully committed without being sappy, and their encounters explicit enough to make me blush but not cringe.

What’s more, your “LYLS” and its sequels, “A Life Extraordinary” and “This Hungry World”  had something that seemed to be a rarity in fic. By then, I’d read a lot of sex:  sex against walls, in hot tubs, on beds with golden bedspreads and ornate wrought-iron frames; first-time sex, slash sex, D/s sex; sex in corporate boardrooms, in bar restrooms, in tattoo parlors and in meadows.

But what I hadn’t encountered much of is the most common kind of sex of all: married sex.* (Despite all the stereotypes, the people who have the most sex aren’t swinging singles.)

From a literary narrative standpoint, there’s a good reason for that. If the arc of a romance novel is -- forgive me for being hetero-normative --  girl meets boy, girl loses boy, girl finds boy again and finally professes her love and proposes, The End, when you add sex to the mix, it’s necessarily going to be  unmarried sex. (What seems to be popular right now is a couple who secretly love each other but because of misunderstandings and/or  insecurity claim they want to boink with no strings attached.) And, of course, sex that is dangerous or is forbidden in some way, and thus the opposite of married sex, carries an extra frisson of eroticism.

But your “LYLS” trilogy just teemed with married sex. In “A Life Extraordinary” and “This Hungry World,” Bella has become a vampire and so even the obstacle of human limits is gone. Yet the sex remains as emotionally compelling as before. Bella and Edward often have the sort of sex that only supernatural creatures could, but it’s reasonable in the world you set up.  There’s also sex familiar to regular married folks: long-distance sex and interrupted sex, with the incursion coming in the form of wolves instead of toddlers. And through it all Bella and Edward are exploring not just bodies, but minds.

The whole trilogy is a lesson in how sex scenes can serve as character study, and in how fucking while married can be really, really hot.

And as someone with no experience in writing fiction but who was starting to get her own ideas about playing around with an ExB story, I was fascinated by how your style developed as you wrote at what seemed to be a furious pace, from the mammoth “LYLS” trilogy to a double-track post-“New Moon” story, “My Yes, My No,” and then “The Sweater,” a little gem of a novella with a single lime, but a doozy of one. (It was awfully hard to memorize verb declensions when I knew that a wonderful new chapter from you was waiting.)

Nowadays, you’ve moved out of Twific and onto the best-seller list as half of the Christina Lauren erotica team. I enjoy the books: the encounters are both romantic and imaginative, and there are glimpses of the utterly devoted Edward of “LYLS” in the heroes, but the stories have pretty much stuck to the standard sex-with-misunderstandings script of modern romance novels. That may be because that’s what you guys want to write, or it may be a realistic understanding of what sells. I can’t fault anyone for that.

But maybe one day the two of you will publish a novel in which a openly-in-love wife and husband are the heroine and hero. I’d snatch it up. If anyone can make married sex sell, it’s you. In the meantime, dear Lola, thank you for so many hours of fabulous reading.

*The exception in Twific, of course, being wedding-night sex on an island off the elusive “west coast of Brazil.”

Best,
Eiluned price

Dear Coldplaywhore,

It’s been a while since we’ve seen you, but we know you’re out there somewhere.
I miss you and your stories. I do hope you’re still writing in some capacity, because you’re pretty awesome at it. I know you said you were fresh out of ideas, but some of us still think of you once in a while, and cross our fingers that something will pop up in our inboxes.

I remember a long, long time ago reading Room 15, I think, and thinking, man this is good; I need more of this stuff. Your stories were sweet...and hot...and awesome, and I wanted to be able to write stories like that, because THAT was the kind of stuff I loved reading.

You didn’t have anything to do with why I started writing, but I remember fangirling so hard when you reviewed something of mine. I don’t remember how, when or why, but it stuck in my head that, like, OH MY GOD Coldplaywhore (cue the squealing) was reading my shit!

You laugh, but dude, I was terrified and excited and a total fangirl, I swear. And I actually told you this, like legit, replied and told you. I know it sounds silly, but I had always enjoyed your words, so to be read by you (among several others who may or may not have rolled their eyes when I replied with an OMFG!! comment) gave me the confidence in those dark times (you know, when the words just don’t want to come together) to keep going.

So because of this, thank you. Thank you for writing what you did and somehow being an inspiration to other writers such as myself.

Thank you for reading and reviewing, and being so incredibly supportive.

You’re funny and witty and sarcastic and sweet, so thank you for not being all weird on me because I’m a dork. (Though, I will totally understand if you’re creeped out by this.)

Missy (CullensTwiMistress)

Dear Heather (aka Twilover76),

When TLS asked me to write a love letter, it took me all of two seconds to respond, and no time whatsoever to know who I was going to choose.  Surprise, it’s you!

It was easy to pick you, because we’ve grown from reader/author to friends.  I truly count myself lucky to know you.  I don’t know when our friendship formed; I just know that it did.  I got to know you through reviews, then on Twitter, then off.  Your friendship has been one of the many gifts this fandom has given me that I’ll always treasure.

The first story of yours I read was Twelve Days of Christmas.  I was immediately captivated by your words and your imagination.  I remember you freaking out when you found out I was reading your words.  I don’t know why, because they were wonderful.

Right after that I was on to Fated Love, and then, my favorite, Choices.  I could rhapsodize over that particular story for ages if you let me.  It’s my favorite alternate Twilight story.  I love the thought of Edward and Bella, forewarned and forearmed with what would happen, and making the choice to be together.  The changes you made captivated me from the very start.  I reread it every few months or so, even though it’s not quite done yet.  No pressure, I swear!   It’s just that it’s that good.

Then No Ordinary Proposal came along and everybody saw just how awesome and talented you were.  And I’m grateful for that, because everyone should have the gift of your words, and you yourself.  You’re one of the nicest people in the fandom, and I’m better for having known you.

You’ve not only been a friend; you’ve been a pimper, supporter, cheerleader, and of course my fantasy football cohort in crime.  In fact, I can blame you for the obsession the latter has become for me.  Blame, thank, whatever!  Know that I appreciate it, even if your quarterback killed my powerhouse team.  (Yes, forever bitter!)

You brought me into the world of Skype writing, and in fact, I popped my cherry with you by writing a sex scene for WWF.  That was fun to share when we compared notes.  I guess in a way, we sexted.  How about that?  Just another manifestation of my love for you!

I let you sucker me into bad sports bets, using my love against me, but since the bet was for a love poem, we both won in the end.  I’ll finish my love letter to you with another love poem, because that’s our thing (and Jaspy’s, of course).

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

I’m lucky to have a friend,

As sweet as you.

You make me smile every day,

With your pics, and your words so kind.

I adore you in thousands of ways,

Won’t you be my Valentine?

That was Jaspy level poetry just for you.  I’ve officially written you more poems than anybody in my life, so that says it all.  Thank you for your talent, your sense of humor, your words, and most importantly your friendship.  It means the world to me.

Love,
Amy (aka Nolebucgrl)

Dear Tara Sue Me,

My rose colored glasses have been shattered into a million jagged pieces, my mind is still in disbelief by your words that are always visually stimulating.  Doctors almost had to be called to stop my racing heart.  Psychologist fees almost had to be paid as I explored an unknown chartered path along with your heroines.  What was once taboo is now more mainstream all because you allowed us into your imagination.

What I love about your novels is how quickly you drift into the storyline.  I love authors that can visually bring one into their stories where you climb in, not wanting to leave until the last word has been read.  I also love how I feel when I'm reading them.  If I'm laughing, crying, or wound up in the sexual tension, the ripples of emotions flow effortlessly.  That is an art; a skill that you have perfected.

I consider myself a romantic with a dirty mind.  I love anything and everything regarding romance.  It doesn't matter how cliché or cheesy; the thought behind the sentiment will always win out.  In 2010, my love for the Twilight series grew when I stumbled across fanfiction by reading the fandom comment sections online.  There were stories such as First and Ten, Master of the Universe, The Office, The Last Tango in Forks.  The list kept growing, and I read them all. Many are no longer available as fics but are now published works.  Each had their own twists on each of the Twilight characters.  Many opened my eyes to a world I knew nothing about, and it was a privilege being able to read these incredible stories.  But over and over again, The Submissive, The Dominant and The Training were recommended countless times.  I soon discovered that many writers, some published authors credited your works as inspiration as well.

Your constant nod to fanfiction is honorable and well respected.  Both your character and works have not only inspired me, but countless other writers to express themselves openly, and with a new passion.

Thank you Tara Sue Me for sharing a part of yourself to the world.

Sincerely,
Redtini

My dearest Katinki,

I'm such a huge fangirl of yours. Your work is so inspiring and such a delight to read.

I still remember when I read the first chapter of Dark Games & Twisted Minds. You killed people! Well, not in the first chapter, but still, I was hooked.  The best part was when I sent you a p.m. and told you'd I wanted to be your pre-reader and you said yes! Best day ever!

Your ability to write all genres; drama, angst, horror, porn AND comedy, remains to be one of the many things about you to admire. From your humor in Renfield and Chiclets, to your romantic prowess in Love Songs in E Minor. To the angst of An Angry Man and then the beauty and drama of Requiem. Then, the world you're weaving currently with the dramatic and suspenseful Operation: Break the Dawn and finally, the amazing, touching, hard to read but too important not to, A Voice in the Darkness. These and all the rest of your work is what writers everywhere should recognize and aspire to emulate. Your talent is astounding.

Our time together in the fic world has been such a treat for me. I stand in awe of the mutual love of one set of books, turning into talented people such as yourself writing continuations of Edward and Bella for us.

You honor me with your friendship in real life and I can never thank you enough for your encouragement and support when I wanted to try my hand at writing myself. You mean the world to me.

Keep writing, you're too fabulous to stop! I still say you could publish your stories and/or put out original fiction, I bet they'd be bestsellers.

All my love,
Billi Cullen

Love Letters

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, love is in the air here at The Lemonade Stand. So we asked a group of authors to choose an author they love – someone who moves them, be it through their words or uplifting presence in our fandom – and write them a love letter.
Due to the overwhelming positive response, we will be posting these daily, from now until Valentine's Day!

Dear LyricalKris,

I entered the fandom in 2008, but didn't find you until 2010 when you posted Parenthetical Love. I then had to devour everything else you had already posted. I can't explain what your words do to me, but they have a way of pulling me in and making me love your characters, sometimes way more than the original Edward and Bella we first fell in love with. I have yet to find a story from you that I don't like, or characters that I can't stand. You have a talent for sucking us in and making us stay there. Like with trouble...Carlisle and Edward isn't a typical pairing in this fandom, but that story is easily one of my favorites, with possibly one of the best Carlisles I have ever read. Your stories are a welcome escape now, just as they had been when I first found you. I was taking care of my gran who had alzheimers and cancer, and it was your stories that gave some much needed reprieve.

Somewhere along the way, I followed you on twitter shortly after I read Parenthetical Love I believe,  and to be honest, it took me two years to finally message you because I was that shy. But when I finally did get the nerve to message you, you quickly became one of the go to people I'd talk to first when I was on. During these last few years since I first found you, you posted story after story and some of them, like Lost Half, Angel In A Centerfold and Nightmare Before Christmas have wrapped me up to where I can't get enough, even after Lost Half has long since been completed. Now that I get to pre-read your words, I feel even more special and end up loving your characters even more, if that is at all possible. I think it is due to seeing how much work, time and thought you put behind your stories. You amaze me with how much you churn out for this fandom and your original works.

But then you dragged me into the Supernatural fandom, and I will be forever grateful. You snagged me with your constant posts about Destiel, and your tumblr was over run with all things Supernatural, so I had to know what the big deal was. I wouldn't change a thing, just another thing for me to chat with you about.

I now Consider you one of my best fandom friends. I can talk to you about anything and everything and you just get me. I'm still surprised you wanted to work on Long Distance with me, but I wouldn't trade a moment. It has been fun, and probably one of the best experiences I've had in this fandom as of late.

So Thank you for your stories and being the amazing person, writer and friend that you are.

With love,
Krystel (Myonlyheroin)

Dear Amy (aka Troublefollows1017) ~

When I first started reading your words, I never would have guessed we’d be “friends”, much less the friends we are today. A lot of times, we meet people in the fandom arena that we might think is a friend from our end of the spectrum, but it turns out, they don’t consider us the same. That stings, a little, but when we meet someone who does turn out to be, not only a great friend, but a mentor as well, we forget about all those other instances.

That’s what happened with you. Not only have you encouraged me in with my own stories and my path in life, but you are the epitome of who I aspire to be when I grow up.I know you don't writing in the fandom anymore but I wanted you to know that your writing will always be at the top of my favorites list. You've continued to give us the same level if not higher caliber of stories and I thank the friend gods that you are still the same humble, crazy girl I first met so long (but not so long) ago.

No matter how successful you are or will be, I know you'll always be there for me. I hope you know I’ll always be there for you too, woman. You are cut from the best cloth, you are good people, the kind I want to support no matter what.

Favorite story side note: I know a lot of this fandom adores Fridays at Noon. I do too. But my favorite story of yours is The Weather Girl. That story has stuck to my heart since the first line and I still re-read it from time to time just so I can see if I still cry during certain parts.

I do.

love you Ames.

Never. Ever. Change.Kay?

BIG HUGE LOVE ALWAYS,
Jo (aka FictionFreak95)

 Dear Mazzy Starla,

I’m truly sorry, but I think it’s been public knowledge for a long, long time now.

Only I would write a love letter to another woman’s husband.

 Dear Cracked Fic,

We often distill our fandom time down to the relationships we form here. Aside from all the reviews or the words or the disjointed rambling threads, it’s the people we create connections with that make this place important. The face hiding behind the Team America profile picture who becomes much more than just a mask.

You’re a bit of an anomaly around these parts. An enigma. One of the only men to hold his own in this fandom full of women, though I’m still debating if this is because you’re incredibly smart or completely insane. You are mystery writer with a gift for noir. A voice of reason amidst the din. A dude in a long black coat with an unhealthy love of pizza, beer, and words (not to mention spraycan cheese, but I will forgive you for that one.) While my meadow may be small, you are an integral part of it.

You have, on many occasions, renewed my love for words; almost always at times when my well has run completely dry. Your timing is impeccable. A single, infamous guest review and hundreds of flash fiction rounds later, I am privileged to have wormed my way into your inner circle. Lucky enough to have shared highs, lows, and a myriad of inbetweens with you.

Thankful that this fandom brought the two of us together, across impossible odds. Despite whatever the future holds for both of us, I’d happily spend my days stalking you on tumblr, tossing three hundred word prompts back and forth, or simply comparing book lists. There may be a day when I show up at your door (probably with pizza and beer) but I promise to keep my wild fangirl in check.

This Bee is nursing a serious braincrush. The rest, I’ll leave unsaid.

I just love you, man.

Honeybee

Dear Deb (Drotuno)

It’s not often that a person finds their best friend from a fanfic. When I first read your stories, I fell in love with your writing. I offered to become your beta, and through that, we became friends, and I soon fell in love with you as a person, too. You are my “sista from another mista,” the yin to my yang, the salt to my…well, you get the idea. Basically we share a dirty mind and a love of sweet Edwards, dirty Edwards, vulnerable Edwards, strong Edwards, and every Edward in between, and we love a strong Bella who doesn’t put up with crap from anyone. When I need a shoulder to cry on or a friendly ear, your there, but you’re always the first to tell me to “Suck it up, buttercup” if I need to get my head out of my ass.

As a writer, you’re in what I consider a very elite class. Your writing lifts me up when I’m down, makes me laugh when I want to cry, and gives me company when I feel alone. Your characters are strong and funny and sexy, and whether someone loves or hates one of them, there’s no question that they make you feel. Not all writers can say that. Take Jacob in your “Angel” series. He is an abuser from the beginning and a jerk for a long time in the series, but by the end, you’ve made peace with him. Or look at Jacob (boy, you REALLY don’t like him, do you? *snicker*) in “Rain Must Fall,” which I couldn’t get enough of and desperately wish there was more of… He’s a drunk, verbally abusive, but in the end, you find yourself almost appalled that you feel bad about what happens to him. *laugh*

As a writing partner, you’re second to none. I can’t begin to count the number of e-mails we send back and forth on a given week, but when we’re writing a story together, that number is actually astounding. You encourage me like no one ever has before—in “real life” or online. My muse can be finicky and my self-esteem about what I write is sometimes very low, so when I need your support, you’re always there to give it to me. You makes me want to be better—not just through your words but by how you yourself are. Without you, I wouldn’t be half the writer I am and I wouldn’t have nearly the fun I’ve had in the fandom.

You are who I aspire to be as a writer, and I am truly lucky to be able to call you my friend. Thank you, Deb, for your words and your friendship. I love you, babe.

Jenny (JenRar)

Dear locqua,

It’s said that we always remember our firsts.

First date.

First kiss.

First car.

Amongst those milestones, I will also remember the first fan fiction I ever read.

It was your beautiful story, Music Lessons, and it was a quiet day in the office when I stumbled across you, quite by accident.

It was late 2008.  The first Twilight movie had just come out and during a few spare minutes between meetings, I went online to buy tickets for my daughter and me to see a weekend session. We’d both read the books, and were keen to see how the story of Edward and Bella translated to film.

There were many Twilight links and not just for the movie.  There were MTV interviews.  Stephenie Meyer’s own website.  A Wiki page.  I ignored them all though, and moved the cursor towards Event Cinemas Twilight Tickets, but as the little arrow slid across the screen, the phone rang. I was distracted.  And accidentally clicked on the wrong link as I answered the call.

Up came a site, so striking in black and red, with the word TWILIGHTED emblazoned across the top.

This was my introduction to fan fiction.

To the person on the other end of the phone, I was polished and professional.  They would never have known my eyes were growing wider and my attention drifting away as I focused more and more on the screen before me.

It looked like Twilight stories.  But with different scenarios.  Different endings.  How bizarre.  My curiosity was well and truly piqued. I scrolled across the screen.  Up and down.  There were lots of stories.  One had recently updated, whatever that meant, and as I ended my call, I clicked on the link, and opened Music Lessons.

Oh my….

If words were honey…

It was so beautifully written, the language so subtle and evocative, and with such a masterful use of music.  And the characters seemed so true to the books, but their story, in your words, gave me more, somehow.  I was swept up, fascinated and intrigued.

I was hooked.

And I was late for my next meeting.

You can imagine my horror, when I came back to Music Lessons the next day, and found that it wasn’t complete.

The realisation of “update” hit me.  These stories were posted chapter by chapter.  Perhaps days, or even weeks apart.

So it became that I would check, every couple of days, for a new update of Music Lessons.  The routine was something like this…arrive at work, check schedule, check emails, get cup of tea, check for Music Lessons.

It was so exciting when a new update did appear.  Like I’d found a treasure I’d thought lost.

There were lots of wonderfully sigh-worthy moments in your story. Their trip to see the concert was probably the highlight for me.  The tension and anticipation between Edward and Bella in the lift, and on the balcony, was almost painful, but delicious; a very delicate but satisfying balance.

And the ending…wow.  The sailboat.  The storm.   So beautiful.  So steamy and seductive.

It was an incredible introduction to fan fiction.

From Music Lessons I went on to read other stories, by other authors.  I even wrote a few fics of my own.  And though I’ve never revisited Music Lessons since that first time, it’s stayed with me as a truly beautiful, and memorable, piece of writing.

Thank you for writing it.

Love,
Windchymes

My dearest, darling Windchymes,

When I was approached to be part of Love letters to an author I admire, your name was quick to come to mind.

I wonder if you realize the rare gift you possess? Your wonderful talent is such that you take words—those used countless times a day, by thousands of people without a thought—and turn them into magic.

Your stories, be they fanfiction or original novels, take us on journeys. Beautiful, rich, winding journeys that light our lives, fill our heads with vivid, wonderful images and our hearts with feelings—sometimes tender and uplifting, and at other times, clutching and frantic.

Your gift of relating feelings, of setting scenes, and helping us, the reader, be right there with your characters in the story, is second-to-none. You wield your mighty pen the same way Monet did his paintbrush, shading and coloring until the picture we see is so perfect we come back to it over and again, seeking the pleasure it brings us.

As your beta, I have been allowed the privilege of witnessing your genius process.  The way your brilliant mind takes a simple idea and slowly begins to build it into a layered, emotional story that grips the reader, leaving them wanting more—every single time.  Some of my favorite emails from you begin with: so I had an idea…

Please never stop thinking of those ideas.

Every story I read by you becomes my favorite. Every time I know you’re writing something new, I grin with anticipation. I celebrate your successes, gloat over your achievements and brag about the fact I can call you my friend.

Now, we come to that part…

I had no idea so many years ago, when I hesitantly contacted you, asking if perhaps you needed some help toning down your “Aussie-isms” if I would even receive a reply. As a fangirl, I squealed loudly when not only did you answer me back but told me you would love to have someone work with you. Who knew those first shy messages would turn into one of the greatest friendships of my life.

And what a friend you are: kind, funny, loving, supportive. Always ready to lend a hand, offer a shoulder, and share your wisdom; rarely asking for anything in return and always quick to brush off praise. You awe me with your talent, humble me with your modesty and inspire me to be a better writer.

As our emails grew from those first sharing of chapters to changing slightly as personal details were shared, life stories swapped, and pictures exchanged, our friendship solidified.  Occasional contact turned frequent, emails lengthened—often times having nothing to do with writing but simply sharing of our lives. It is one of the greatest blessings in my life.

So, whether you’re writing a tender Vampward, a fresh, complex, wonderful character for us to fall in love with, or a new chapter of Dr. Cullen coming to visit me, your words are golden.

Thank you my friend, for sharing your gift with us.

Your readers love you.

So do I.

Dear GothicTemptress,

“A single candle can illuminate a room. A true friend can light up a lifetime.”
-Unknown

I read this quote and you immediately came to mind, because YOU, sweet Becca, are that light. You brighten this entire fandom every single day with your words, your spirit, and your contagious positivity.

I remember being instantly smitten with you when we first met two years ago over a flurry of reviews, replies, and all the messages that followed. Even through the computer screen, your genuine kindness and warmth was evident – but when I met you in person, I absolutely fell in love. I sat at your kitchen table – me the suburban mom with the minivan and you the live out loud mom with the corset and her finger on the pulse of the city. On the surface, we appeared so different, but beneath, so much the same. It’s the differences that I admire and as a result I find myself living more in the moment… out loud.

As a writer, you’re much the same, leaving me in awe with your words, which are poetic and bold, and just like the ropes in Forget Me Knots, they leave a lasting impression. The beautiful way you weave your words often leaves readers like me breathless, much like a sharp pull of the corset lace from Eighteen. No matter the genre or subject matter you choose to explore, your stories are absolutely captivating and nothing short of brilliant. With each story you write, you always bring something new and different, a fresh perspective that encourages growth and often instills hope.

You pal, have an exceptional gift for story-telling, but also an equally extraordinary ability to share your talent. You’re a born nurturer and have made such a profound impact on so many writers, myself included, by inspiring, encouraging, and helping us to find our words or in my case, my perve swerve.

I could go on all day, because you are so many things to so many people, Becca. A muse. A goddess. A sounding board. A source of endless encouragement and insight. But above all, you’re one of the most genuinely kind and amazingly talented people I’ve had the pleasure to know and a very dear friend and I’m so grateful to have you in my life.

Church Hugs,
LayAtHomeMom

Dear Solostintwilight,

Once upon a time, I stumbled upon your Amish story. My knowledge of the Amish consisted of a Weird Al Yankovich video and what little I'd seen on television and movies, so I wasn't quite sure if your story was for me. But your writing was amazing, and I'm a sucker for anything Edward and Bella, so I read a few chapters. It wasn't long before I was hooked, and "In Your World" became, and remains, one of my favorite fan fic stories ever.

I love stories that tug on heart strings. That’s the kind of stories I like to read and write.I also like stories that make you think, make you question, and teach you something.  While “In Your World” was fiction, I learned so much about the Amish community. I’d never heard of Rumspringa, and those scenes at the barn party were some of the most enlightening of any story I’ve ever read. To think that innocent, sheltered teenagers are sent out into the world, exposing them to things they’d only heard about (drugs, sex, music) . .. I can’t help but think how equally exciting and terrifying that must be for them.

And then there were the love scenes. From the courting to the cornfield, from the hayloft to the wedding night, and then all the cold winter nights in their new home . . .*happy sigh* . . . the love scenes were written tastefully and beautifully and really showcased the devotion Edward and Bella had for each other.

Honestly, it’s embarrassing how many times I swoony sighed. :)

While I was reading, I told my husband that maybe the Amish have the right idea. Maybe a simpler, more peaceful life wouldn’t be so bad. But then he reminded me of how much I like my WI-FI, so . . . :)

“In Your World”will forever be on my list of Top 5 Fics, and you will forever be one of my favorite authors. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lavish praise upon you and your story, and I’m equally thrilled to be able to hold the published version in my hands.

Happy Valentine’sDay! xxoo

Dear Sparrownotes24,

I remember the first time I saw your name, back when we both used to post Monday teasers for our fanfics on The Fictionators blog. Back then you were just someone writing a very funny story about a sexy soldier Edward and his MudElla. And if I’m being totally honest, I was probably a bit jealous of your review count for Mud, Swear and Beers, because NOBODY was reading my story!

Rather sadly, I still remember our first conversation. It involved nipples and my desperate search for a better word to describe these. Having gone through nubbins, peaks and every other iteration we came to the conclusion that nipples it must be.

From the start, it seemed as though we had lots in common. We both started writing fanfic within days of each other, we’re both British and we’re a similar *cough* age. Okay, you’re right, I’m slightly older. Still, we started pre-reading for each other, becoming sounding boards for storylines, commiserating with each other when we’d get a bad review. And through all this, a friendship grew, leading us to be called the ‘Ant and Dec’ of the fanfic world, and I can’t think of a better description than that.

Some of my favourite fanfic memories are of when we were regularly writing The Art of Getting Fluffed together. You used to send me your chapter while I was at work, and I’d sneak into the toilet to read it. People gave me funny looks when I came out, almost doubled over with laughter; God only knows what they thought I was doing.

I loved the way we used to try and leave an impossible cliffhanger for each other, waiting to see how we climbed out of the hole. I think our enjoyment of the process definitely came over in our writing, and it was great that all our readers joined in the fun. Oh yeah, by the way, we really should finish that story, shouldn’t we?

When you wrote Orange Kisses and Peppermint Hearts for my birthday I think I jumped up and down and squealed. Like all your stories it’s sweet and beautiful with a whimsical quality, and when it went on to earn rave reviews I couldn’t have been prouder. Every time somebody mentions it on facebook or twitter, I feel a twinge of pride, knowing you wrote that for me. Thank you!

Since those days we’ve been through a lot. We’ve met up in three different cities, drunk a few bottles of wine together, and you’ve gone through the pregnancy and birth of your beautiful baby. Now I’m lucky enough to be pre-reading another of your fantastic stories, and I’m loving every word of Sea Salt.

Now stop reading this and go write me some more words!

Love you loads,
Choc xoxo

Dearest LayAtHomeMom,

My first fandom experience with you began over my love of your writing back in 2012. I realized that you had such a fun, hilarious and descriptive way of laying out your characters and scenes. I would review and I noticed that you were one of the few authors that would respond to my reviews.I always appreciated that fact, and admired the way you engaged me in your review replies … it wasn't just about thanking the reader with you, but more about getting to know us better, and showing gratitude in a very personable way. I felt that thoughtful connection and appreciation for you immediately. Anyone that has interacted with you knows that you do this in every facet of your friendships – you're that giving, incredibly loving and nurturing friend who consistently shines with kindness and thoughtfulness.

My dear friend, that thoughtfulness has even branched out into my other author relationships with people that I feel so blessed to have gotten to know through you, including Postapocalypticdepository, CarrieZM and Planetblue. These ladies truly reflect the type of positive and edifying experiences you encourage in everyone around you, proving that wise adage about “the company you keep.” On this Valentine's Day, I want you to know how much I appreciate the love you've shown to me and to others, and I hope you feel that love in abundance too!
You are such an amazing woman, mother and friend, and I love you!

Becca/GothicTemptress

Dearest Lolapops,

The reason I choose to write to you is very simple. Ever since I stumbled upon your fics you have been inspiring me.  So since I’ve discovered your writing, on every napkin I’ve written words on, on every stroke I’ve made on this very keyboard, every time I am struck by the urge to write about the beautifully complicated and pained but victorious nature of human emotion I am inspired and motivated by what you have done. You have indirectly written my youth, my feelings, my falls and triumphs-- if not exact, you have nailed the sentiment. You have written everything I ever longed to read or write and displayed it so naturally that I’ve lived your stories, I’ve cried with your characters and I celebrated their wins as if they were my own.

As an author, you understand human flaws then shape them unapologetically and so even in the painful mistakes and seemingly unforgiveable actions, I understand and forgive; for through your words I see the earnest and often brutal pains of navigating life and its trials, big or small. You write adolescents as they are meant to be:  flawed but trying, making mistakes and learning from them; and that is where the beauty of youth lies.

You understand the difference between a weak female character versus a female character in love and the strength and vulnerability that lies within imperfect relationships. You understand that mistakes and selfish choices don’t have to necessarily create a terrible character rather you have the ability to turn these things in to complex and stunning studies of humans, particularly the young and raw. Then, in the midst of the angst and struggles, you effortlessly weave in the freewheeling and careless but so-real antics of adolescence. Whether these characters are dealing with sudden death or spray painting a boxcar you write them alive and realistic; you write the essence of memories that have faded for me long ago and renew the feeling in me. On a much more shallow but fun note you can write a hot male lead like nobody’s business.

As a fellow writer I suppose I could stop writing anytime now. You have pretty much written everything that I’ve ever wanted to and you’ve done it better than I ever could. You’ve done it better than most mainstream authors could, too. Problem is, beyond entertaining and captivating, you do exactly what I think a good author does to her fellow writers:  you inspire. I read (and re-read) your fics and I’m struck with such excitement and such inspiration—I want to march forward in your wake.

(No one panic, she totally knows I feel this way. She’s cool with it.)

All of this is you as a writer. Recently, I’ve been lucky enough to count you as a friend, too. I could go on about how wide open and hilarious and smart and accepting you are, but I’m not as good of a writer as you are and the words to describe how much I adore you are well beyond me J

Love,
Jandco

Dear Jo/FictionFreak95,

Before I read fic, I was already a voracious reader, but pretty much read mystery novels exclusively. I loved me some strong, complex protagonists, male and female, and intricate mysteries where I couldn’t predict whodunit. It took me a couple of months of reading fic before I stumbled upon “Edward Cullen: Dick for Hire.” And then I let out a breath I didn’t realize I had been holding… No, wait…

All kidding aside, as I sat and read a great mystery with an Edward who cursed as much as I do, appreciated a good tequila shot, and was interesting and complex AND had a Bella who could go toe-to-toe with him, I had an overwhelming feeling of holy shit, I think I just found my people. I didn’t know fanfiction could be like that – that it could be written with that kind of voice - and I hold you directly responsible for my first one shot as a result. You made me realize that sarcastic and funny had a place in fic – that I could write in my own unique voice, with my own personal versions of Edward and Bella, and that was totally okay.

I was too shy and too new to interact with authors at that point, but I knew I wanted to know you. Anyone who was smart enough to write a mystery that challenged me and funny enough to make me laugh as hard as I did reading your work was someone I thought I would probably like… someone I would love to hang out with and grab a drink and shoot the shit. And that ended up being the understatement of the century. I am still ever so thankful that I found the nerve to PM you and ask if you wanted me to beta after going through a chapter of “Vines” for Project Team Beta. I was so nervous... I must have started and deleted that message five times before I finally gathered my courage and pressed send.

As I watched you evolve as a writer through “Vines” and “Blind Spot”, you taught me so much about how to craft a good story, create interesting, fully developed characters, and somehow retain a unique voice through different genres. Watching you just fucking go for it every time gave me the courage to try. First to even try writing, then to try and go further, delve deeper… just to put myself out there in a way I never had before. The encouragement you gave me when we were bouncing ideas around for my Age of Edward piece meant the world. There may have been a small fist pump when you liked what I was thinking – the Jo “seal of approval” is a pretty big deal, my friend.

And now you’ve written two books! The idea of writing a multi chapter fic is still overwhelming to me, and you’ve written two original, wonderful books. Really fucking fantastic books too, I might add. Proud does not even begin to cover how I feel.

I honestly can’t imagine not having you in my life. You’ve taught me so much about writing, about friendship, about trusting people (and not), about ellipses… Thank you doesn’t even come close to covering my gratitude. I love you so fucking much.

Xoxoxo,
Your Betafairy

Dearest Magtwi78

When I was asked if I wanted to write a love note to an author within the fandom, you were the first writer that came to mind!

I have never written a love note, so you’ll have to bear with me!
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

1. You're one of the nicest people I've met within the fandom and even though we haven't even met in person I still consider you my friend. We have the kinship of both being Aussie, which is probably how first related to each other, but you're also just so damn sweet and down-to-earth.

2. Your writing is excellent! I love your sense of romance, all your pairings get there in the end, even if it's an uphill battle, and when they do its all swoony and sweet. Your Bellas are always strong and don't take a lot of shit from anyone. Especially Edward! I loved Yosemite Decimal, the Dozer was so hot. Weather With You brought us some sexy Aussie fluff, and Mate of Honor was just so funny; who doesn't like someone who can laugh at themselves? You picked on Aussies and it was hilarious without being offensive. You also have a bunch of amazing and varied one-shots that I could just keep re-reading over and over.

3. You contribute to the fandom more than you probably think. You're active with reading and you're usually around on Facebook for a quick chat or even just a quick hello, or to chip in your encouragement or opinion when it’s needed.

4. You make excellent graphics. I know this because I played with some of them during the DTE contest. You didn’t really even need me there.

5. Your contribution to the DTE one shot contest was amazing, I know it was a lot of work because I saw it first hand from both you and Nic! You both spent a lot of your spare time, effort and emotion on that contest and it showed in the results.

I am sure there are more characteristics I could point out, but the main objective, and I hope I achieved it, is that you feel loved. You are loved. Not just by me, but by a lot of other readers and writers and Facebookers within the Twilight fandom.

I hope you have a lovely Valentine’s Day. You deserve it!
